Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup loosely packed basil leaves
  • 6 ounces fresh strawberries, stemmed and quartered
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • Juice and zest from 1 lemon
  • 1 1/2 ounces basil simple syrup
  • 6 ounces Cava or sparkling wine, chilled
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • Garnish: sliced strawberries and basil

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, dissolve 1/2 cup sugar in 1/2 cup water to make the basil simple syrup.
  2. Add basil to the syrup, steep for 30 minutes, then strain and chill the syrup.
  3. In a medium bowl, macerate strawberries with 1/4 cup sugar and lemon zest for about 10 minutes.
  4. Transfer macerated strawberries to a pitcher and add lemon juice, basil simple syrup, Cava, and vodka.
  5. Adjust sweetness with additional simple syrup and add ice to fill the pitcher.
  6. Serve in glasses, spooning strawberries into the bottom of each glass and topping with sangria. Garnish with sliced strawberries and basil.
