Ingredients

  • 1/4 clementine
  • 1/4 lemon
  • 1/4 lime
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick
  • 1 fresh bay leaf
  • 1/4 whole nutmeg
  • 1/4 vanilla bean
  • 1/4 star anise
  • 1 cup good red wine

Instructions

  1. In a medium pot, combine sugar, clementine, lemon, and lime peel, and the juice of the clementine.
  2. Add cloves, cinnamon, bay leaf, and 2-3 gratings of a whole nutmeg.
  3. Split the vanilla bean lengthwise, scrape the seeds out, and add both the seeds and the bean to the pot.
  4. Pour in 1/4 cup of wine and bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer for about 5 minutes until it turns into a syrup.
  5. Add the rest of the wine, warm to desired temperature, and keep it warm for serving.
  6. Serve the mulled wine warm in a thick glass or a china tea cup. (Note: Thin and delicate glassware might crack from hot mulled wine).
